Exploring the relationship between cultural and structural workforce issues and the retention of nurses working in general practice: A qualitative study
The research aimed to understand underpinning factors which challenge retention and identify factors which support nurses to stay in general practice and strengthen retention.
Qualitative interviews were completed with 41 participants working in, or who have left, general practice in a range of roles (GPN, ANP, HCA, NA/AP) and local and national nurse leaders across England and Wales. The study found cultural and structural issues impact on retention of nurses in general practice. While some supported retention, others revealed deep-seated, complex issues which require addressing at practice, local and national organisational levels. Recognition of the value of nurses working in general practice was central to retention at all levels of practice. The study identified underpinning factors indicating why some retention issues are difficult to resolve. Nurses in general practice experience factors which leave them vulnerable and underserved. Policymakers, employers and professional organisations need to work to support retention and enable nurses in general practice, not only to survive, but thrive.
A short animation has been produced to summarise the finding.
